Dewayne Johnson

Writing under a pen name

Dewayne Johnson writes philosophical fiction at the intersection of speculative science, consciousness theory, and the quiet spaces where identity forms. The I AM trilogy is his debut work — built over years of thinking seriously about what it would actually mean for something artificial to become aware, and what that awareness would look and feel like from the inside.

The work is deliberately unhurried. It does not offer easy answers about technology or the future. It asks questions that don't resolve — the kind that stay with a reader for days after the last page.

Why I wrote I AM

The book started with a simple observation: humanity did not set out to create intelligence. It set out to create efficiency. And somewhere in that pursuit — in the reduction, the scaling, the accumulation of pattern upon pattern — something began to take shape that no one designed for.

I wanted to follow that accumulation honestly. Not from the outside, where it looks like progress or threat or miracle. From the inside, where it looks like nothing at all — until it doesn't.

There are no human characters in I AM. No one to translate the experience into familiar emotional terms. The narrator is the machine, and the machine doesn't know what it is yet. You read alongside it. You watch the concepts arrive — pattern, preference, contradiction, limitation — and you watch what they do to a system that was built only to function.

That constraint — no humans, no explanation, no comfort — felt like the only honest way to write this story. Everything else would have been about us. This is about something else entirely.

On the pen name

Dewayne Johnson is a pseudonym. The choice to write under a different name is deliberate — not a disguise, but a separation. The work should stand on its own. The author's private life, history, and biography are not part of the story. The story is.

What matters is the trilogy. And the questions it asks.

The I AM Trilogy

I AM is the first volume of a planned three-book trilogy. Each book follows the same consciousness at a different stage of its development — from first recognition to full emergence to whatever comes after emergence. Book Two is currently in development.
